Coming Soon to a World Near You

Some signals to spur our thinking about the world that is emerging before our eyes.

Lets start with AI Steve.

He ran for Parliament in Britain for Brighton. He lost. Big time. AI Steve received 179 votes or about 0.3 percent of the total.

Why do I think this important. Because failure is a part of entrepreneurship and change. And, for me, AI Steve maybe a scary thought, but he was designed to advance our democracy in some ways. First, AI Steve stood for a new party, which may be one of our ways forward. Second, AI Steve talked to voters, identified policies that mattered to them, and then the real Steve, an entrepreneur, promised to represent those policies in Parliament.

Given how vulnerable we are to climate instability, strengthening local politics and the importance of local voices will be critical to governing climate change. Climate impacts localities very differently, and may require different strategies for preparation, governance and recovery. We need everyone engaged and that is through governance and government. This is an interesting model that is strengthening local voices. More than that, an AI can work on a smart phone and can conduct these conversations in a range of languages and cultures, making it accessible to everyone.

Want to drive on Sunshine?

I sure do! Folks around the world are working to transform sunshine or solar energy into liquid fuel. Research at the University of Cambridge in the UK, and recently, Project Dawn, the first industrial solar fuel plant in Dusseldorf is trying to produce carbon neutral solar fuel, developed by the Swiss Company Synhelion.

Our Planetary interconnectedness deepens

Even as we now toy with going to Mars, the ocean still remains very much a mystery. When we learn something new about it, we learn something new about ourselves. Here is one of the latest insights. Prochlorococcus bacteria, which are possibly one of the most photo-synthetic microbes we have on Planet Earth and teem through the ocean, are not the independent entities science assumed they were, but are, in fact, interconnected.

These create bridges that cross the ocean transferring information, nutrients and other resources.

I don’t about you, but this is another piece of information that helps me to see how our world and environment are all part of one complex ecosystem. I hope it helps us ask and answer better questions about who we are and how we are meant to live in cooperation and collaboration with each other and with nature.

What are your thoughts or reactions to all or any of this?

  1. […] reusable energy source. It is not just capturing it through solar panels. As I talked about in an earlier post (not A to Z challenge), there is a lot of research looking to convert sunshine into liquid fuel. We […]
